Cratoni C-mute - Helmet speedpedelec - NTA 8776
Because safety is of utmost importance, the German brand Cratoni has developed a special helmet for speed pedelecs / e-bikes, the C-Mute.
This speedpedelec helmet meets the NTA 8776 standard (speedpedelec up to 45km/h). More information about the standardization of helmets ebikes / speed pedelec can be found below.

Why is a speed-pedelec helmet necessary?
A speed-pedelec is a bicycle equipped with an electric motor that supports the rider when pedaling up to a maximum speed of 45 km/h. According to the new European Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of two- or three-wheeled vehicles and quadricycles (No. 168/2013), this S-EPAC falls into the same category as a moped. In the Netherlands, therefore, a moped helmet obligation (helmet according to ECE R22) applies when using an S-EPAC.
Protection
In deviation from the moped helmet obligation, from 2017 in the Netherlands it is also allowed to use a helmet that meets the requirements established in NTA 8776. A helmet that complies with NTA 8776 is similar to a bicycle helmet, but is calculated for higher fall speeds and protects a larger part of the head. Compared to a bicycle helmet, the helmet offers in particular more protection for the temples and the back of the head.
In Belgium, no specific standard has been drawn up. The helmet must have an EN 1078 certificate (= every bicycle helmet must have such a certificate) and furthermore, the traffic regulations stipulate that the temples and the back of the head must be protected. Like all products sold in Europe, it must also have a CE mark. In Belgium, it is therefore not easy to determine whether or not your helmet meets the speed pedelec standard. The "protection and sleeping" requirements are not explained in detail, so it is difficult to judge whether or not a specific model of helmet meets these requirements. If you want to be sure, choose a helmet that has the Dutch NTA 8776 certificate.
Development of NTA 8776
In order to develop NTA 8776, an international group of experts used as much as possible the existing knowledge in the field of head protection and the results of tests performed on high-end bicycle helmets. EN 1078 - Helmets for cyclists and users of skateboards and roller skates was then taken as the starting point and the project group tightened up the requirements as much as possible within the scope of current helmet technology. In addition to the increased safety level, the fact that the helmet must be suitable for use during physical exertion and must not impede hearing was also taken into account.
